Those in need come in many forms
There is an increase of crisis calls and requests for shelter that have escalated as a result of COVID-19. Our healing center remains full, and we have a waiting list. It pains my heart to have to turn away individuals who are in desperate need for help.
Last week a woman came by the pantry for food, but we were closed. She was smiling. She was cold. She was hungry. Although she tried to keep her composure, something else was wrong. So, I invited her to come into the pantry while I prepared a bag of food for her. I asked her what more would help her, and she shared her story of abuse.
She was escaping an abusive partner, had just gotten off the bus from another state, had only $2, and did not know where she was going. After hearing her story, I decided to put her up in a hotel for the night. The next day she was able to contact friends who are keeping her safe.
There was another time when we helped a client who needed money for gas so that he could get home after getting food. He was later diagnosed with cancer. Although WHEN is always in need of support, we too try to give others support the best way we can.
