Community Response
Mike Ellis & Mable Dunbar
When Mike Ellis and his wife Dianne watched KHQ news and heard that the truck used by Cleone’s Closet Food Pantry to pick up food for the community was stolen, they were moved to do something. Mike contacted us to let us know that he had a truck and was willing to help us collect food from 2nd Harvest. He said that he did not know about WHEN and was interested in letting his friends know about the programs and services that we offer. He decided to contact Michael Crouse of Total Security to see if he would be willing to donate a security system for the food pantry. Michael said yes. Mike said that he was willing to pick up food as long as we needed his help. And of course we did need his help. He followed through with his promise and picked up his first pallet of food from 2nd Harvest on food on October 29.

When Mike Ellis realized the amount of food that we needed to transport from 2nd Harvest to Cleone’s Closet Food Pantry he decided to go on Face Book and ask for help. Immediately after he posted the need two men responded and offered their trucks to do the pickups. On November 5, Mike Ellis, Daniel Seranno and Jeramee Sauls loaded up their trucks with pallets of food which they delivered to the food pantry. They both stated that they are willing to help us as long as there was a need!
Melissa Johnson, Antiterrorism Program Manager
When Guy Conley, Chief of of Plans and Program for the 92nd Security Forces Squadron of Fairchild Air Force Base, heard about the stolen truck, he wanted to help. He had one of his colleagues, Melissa Johnson who is the Antiterrorism Program Manager for the base, enlist the help of their co-workers and who donated $250 on November 5. The donation will be used towards getting another truck. Guy stated that they are willing to help the network in any way they can. Melissa offered to volunteer at the food pantry.
When Ron Ulmer, Pastor of the Hillyard Baptist Church, heard that our truck was stolen, he immediately contacted WHEN and offered to give us a shuttle bus since he had two of them. Ron and his church members have been very supportive of the network since its establishment in 2009. Ron’s wife, Rhonda was instrumental in allowing the network to use one of their homes, rent free for four years, to provide a healing center for abused women and children. The home was called Patty’s Healing Center, named for one of our clients who passed away.
